Preserving Your Child’s Gift of Clear Sight

Myopia is among the most common vision problems detected during children’s eye exams. Nearly half of the world’s population is expected to have some degree of myopia by 2050, making it a priority for us to help manage myopia and its effects on lifetime eye health.

At IOE Vision Care, we can detect early signs of myopia progression and offer strategies to help control its development. You can support your child’s vision and long-term eye health too.

What Is Myopia?

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a refractive error that can blur your child’s distance vision. Even though they may be able to see up close objects clearly, your child may struggle with reading whiteboards or playing sports at school.

Myopia can progress and affect your child’s vision as they grow up. Our goal is to manage its progression early, preserving their clear sight and eye health.

How Does Myopia Develop?

Myopia occurs when the eye grows too long or when the cornea becomes too steep. It often starts developing around the age of 6 for many children.

When eyes change shape, light entering the eye can focus in front of the retina instead of on it, leading to blurry distance vision. As your child grows up, their eye can continue to change shape, further affecting the issues causing light to focus at the wrong point in their eye.

Your child may have a higher risk of developing myopia if they:

  • Spend lots of time doing up-close work.
  • Don’t spend enough time outdoors.
  • Have parents or family members who also have myopia.

How Myopia Affects Your Child

Myopia can lead to several quality of life concerns, such as difficulty focusing at school or playing sports with friends. However, if myopia continues to progress as kids grow up, they can also develop high myopia and an increased risk of:

  • Cataracts
  • Glaucoma
  • Macular degeneration
  • Retinal detachment

Myopia control strategies can help manage the risk of these issues. In some cases, we may also recommend traditional corrective lenses like glasses or contacts to help your child achieve clear vision.

MiSight Contact Lenses for Myopia Control

MiSight contacts are a specialty lens specifically designed to help manage myopia progression.

These lenses change how light focuses on your child’s retina, signaling the eye to slow its growth. By managing your child’s myopia development, these lenses could help preserve your child’s clear sight and reduce their risk of other vision and eye health concerns later in life.
